I feel that they address deep metaphysical and existential issues that arise in the practice of medicine and health care, both for the practitioner and the patient. As I grow older, the therapeutic relationship becomes a deeply personal interaction based on a desire for mutual understanding. Often, I am the student and a very ill person is my teacher.
